The Joe Louis Theatre performs Hun Lakhon
Lek or small traditional puppets with outstanding
animation potential.
Joe Louis has toured internationally and spent
nearly 60 years making and performing with these
puppets, so expect the ultimate in Thai craftmanship
and entertainment.
The
puppets each require three people to manipulate
them and the range of gestures convey some very
human emotions. The puppeteers wear masks, which
are as carefully and lovingly crafted as the
puppets themselves. Featuring favourite characters
and events, the story follows snippets of the
Ramakien (the Thai version of the epic Hindu
tale The Ramayana). The
only other company of this type in the world
is in Japan. Performances last for 90 minutes
and dinner is available on Saturday nights.
The process of making a puppet involves painstaking
attention to details of expression and motifs
of the costumes. Joe was recognised as a National
Artist for his years of dedication to a type
of puppetry that is like no other. The audience
is given an opportunity to see masks made by
the man himself.
